World Health Organization Removes Singapore From SARS List
On Friday, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially removed Singapore from its list of countries affected by the recent SARS outbreak, noting it has been at least 20 days since the last case was placed in isolation.
According to Associated Press reports, the 20-day incubation period is twice the maximum amount for SARS. It is an indication that the SARS virus chain has been broken.
"This is an inspiring victory that should make all of us optimistic that SARS can be contained everywhere," said Dr. David Heymann, executive director for communicable diseases at WHO.
SARS killed 31 people in Singapore since March and caused 206 people to become ill.
