Traffic Updates as The Nation’s Capitol Prepares For Reagan Memorial
June 8, 2004 – As the nation’s capitol prepares for President Reagan’s funeral, travelers and commuters can expect closures and delays. Significant traffic tie-ups are expected in the Washington area during this week’s memorial services. NTA will relay information as it becomes available.
- The US Capitol building will close for tours Monday, June 7 at 4:30 p.m., and re-open on Saturday, June 12 at 9 a.m.
- The National Gallery of Art and all Smithsonian museums will be open to the public on Friday, June 11.
- Wednesday evening, during rush hour, the former president’s casket will be moved from Andrews Air Force Base into the District.
- Traffic will be prohibited on Pennsylvania Avenue as Reagan’s casket makes its way to the Capitol. That portion of the procession is expected to start about 6 p.m. near 16th Street and Constitution Avenue, Northwest.
- The Capitol Square (the area bound by 1st Street, N.W., 1st Street, N.E., Constitution Avenue and Independence Avenue) closes at 3:00 p.m. for vehicular traffic.
- Constitution Avenue (between 3rd Street, N.W. and 2nd Street, N.E.) and 1st Street, N.E. (from Columbus Circle to Independence Avenue) will be closed from 3:00 p.m. until approximately 8:00 p.m. Note: There will be temporary traffic interruptions on Friday, June 11, 2004, for the departure of the funeral procession at approximately 10:30 a.m.
