NFL Festival Causes D.C. Street Closures, Limited Mall Access
Tour operators and motorcoach drivers bound for Washington, D.C., should be aware of several street closures and the closure of access to the National Mall at noon Sept. 4 in association with the National Football League Kickoff Festival.

Street closures scheduled during the Sept. 1-4 festival include:

  • 4th Street between Independence and Pennsylvania Avenues is currently closed and will reopen at 7 a.m. Sept. 6.
  • Madison and Jefferson Drives will be closed between 3rd and 14th Streets beginning at 6 a.m. Sept. 4 and will remain closed until midnight.
  • 7th Street between Independence and Constitution Avenues after approximately 9:30 a.m. and will open at 10 p.m. Sept. 4.

The National Park Service will close access to the National Mall at noon Sept. 4. Access to NTL activity areas on the Mall will reopen at 3 p.m. Sept. 4 via these checkpoints:

  • 12th Street at Constitution Avenue
  • 12th Street at Independence Avenue
  • 14th Street at Madison Drive
  • 14th Street at Jefferson Drive

The Smithsonian Institution museums are open during the festival, but due to the Sept. 4 access closure to the National Mall, motorcoaches must pick up and drop off passengers on Constitution and Independence Avenues instead of the museum’s regular Mall-side doors.

For questions about Smithsonian museum access during the festival, please call Katherine Neill Ridgley at 202-357-2987.
