ATA Figures Fare Better for Airline Passengers
According to the Air Transport Association (ATA), domestic airfares declined 1.6 percent and the average international airfare rose 1.8 percent in December, compared to the same time period in 2001, giving travelers a much needed advantage.
Ticket prices are at their lowest since 1987 prices were adjusted for inflation, with the average fare for a 1,000-mile trip coming in at $115.94 (excluding taxes). The average cost of a 4,000-mile excursion internationally was $372.94 in December. Similarly, December revenue passenger miles (RPM’s), or the volume of business, were up 13.3 percent, versus the same month in 2001.
As a result of streamlined operations, airlines were able to bring more flights in on time last year than any year since 1995.
