World Tourism Day is Sept. 27
September 24, 2004 – Monday, Sept. 27 is World Tourism Day. This worldwide annual event began in 1980 and serves to foster awareness among the international community of the social, cultural, political and economic values of travel and tourism.
The theme for this year’s celebration is Sport and Tourism: Two Living Forces for Mutual Understanding, Culture and the Development of Societies. The theme was chosen in light of this year’s Olympic games and in celebration of the many economic and social benefits that sports and tourism have throughout the world.
The World Tourism Organization and the International Olympic Committee have expressed their wish to renew their commitment to reinforce partnerships and collaboration between the two mutually beneficial industries. In a joint statement the two organizations suggested that tourism and sport can become the motor for sustainable economic growth, the creation of employment and generation of revenues.
