Wildfires Delay Travelers in Southern California; Thousands Forced to Evacuate
October 28, 2003 – Firefighters continue to battle some of the most destructive wildfires in California’s history. Wildfires are disrupting travel all throughout southern California. Travelers are experiencing countless delays and cancellations as evacuations continue.
On Sunday and Monday, LAX flight arrivals were at an average of 40 per hour compared to the normal rate of 70 per hour.
Los Angeles CVB is now reporting that both LAX and Ontario International airports have returned to normal with Tuesday morning’s peak travel period looking steady as usual. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) radar was expected to reopen Tuesday morning. The facility, just north of San Diego, controls all flights in and out of Southern California airports. Contact the Los Angeles CVB at 213-236-2318 for any additional information.
Flights continue to be delayed out of Burbank. The Ventura Visitors & Convention Bureau recommends that travelers call ahead when flying out. Ventura CVB also reports that the 118 Freeway West remains closed. For information, call the Ventura CVB at 800-333-2989.
