NTA Presents Case for Traveler Impact Office
NTA unveiled a plan that would create an Office of Traveler Impact Assessment within the Department of Homeland Security during the Grassroots Symposium March 3-5 in Washington, D.C.
The office would not have authority to approve or disprove security measures. Instead, it would be charged with assessing the impact of existing/proposed security measures on travelers and the travel industry. It would serve as a consultative body within the department.
The creation of an Office of Travel Impact Assessment will be an uphill battle. Members of Congress visited by Symposium attendees were overwhelmingly supportive of the idea. Democrats and Republicans alike recognized the need for having travelers’ interests represented in the department.
Securing Congressional approval of OTIA will necessitate extensive effort by all members of NTA’s Grassroots Action Network and by NTA’s association partners in the travel industry.
