International Air Travel Holds Steady as Summer Travel Patterns Shift

The latest data from the U.S. National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) paints a mixed picture for international travel in June 2026. While overall international air passenger traffic dipped slightly compared to last year, overseas visitation to the United States remained relatively stable, signaling continued opportunities for the packaged travel industry.

International air travel to and from the United States totaled 24.6 million passengers in June, a 1.6% decrease from June 2025. However, foreign visitor arrivals by air edged up 0.2%, demonstrating continued interest in U.S. destinations despite broader fluctuations in global travel.

U.S. travelers headed abroad at a slower pace, with outbound departures declining 3.2% year over year.

Several of the United States’ largest international markets remained strong. Mexico, Canada, the United Kingdom, the Dominican Republic, and Germany continued to generate the highest volumes of air traffic, while travel between the U.S. and Asia increased 1.2%, making it the only major world region to post year-over-year growth in June.

For NTA members, these trends reinforce the importance of monitoring international demand. Although overall passenger numbers softened slightly, inbound travel continues to provide opportunities for destinations, receptive operators, and suppliers welcoming international visitors, while changing outbound patterns may influence demand for international tour products.
