Capitol Reopens for Tours
In a long-awaited move for tour operators, lawmakers in Washington announced plans to resume public tours of the U.S. Capitol, which were suspended during the war with Iraq.
According to CNN.com, the change means travelers can also walk to the Capitol unannounced and get a tour from an official Capitol guide. However, visitors will not be allowed to stroll through the Capitol halls without an official escort. Additionally, previously limited public tours of the executive mansion will resume in May.
"With an end to hostilities in Iraq, a lowered threat level and this strong security team in place, we are fully reopening the doors to the people’s house and resuming all public tours," said House Administration Committee Chairman Bob Ney, R-Ohio.
