Business as Usual for Parks Canada as Long Weekend Approaches
July 28, 2004 – Parks Canada announced that there will be no interruption in service at the national parks, national historic sites and national marine conservation areas this weekend, which is the annual "August long weekend" in the country. There were concerns that employees at the national sites would be on strike for the three-day weekend, typically one of Canada’s biggest travel weekends of the year.

Canada’s Public Service Staff Relations Board agreed to extend to Aug. 10 the deadline for a report due from the conciliatory board chair. Since Parks Canada’s employees cannot strike until seven days after the report is submitted, the work stoppage for this weekend was avoided.

The possibility for a strike still looms as the Public Service Alliance of Canada – an organization that includes park workers – is still in negotiations with Parks Canada about the situation.
