United Airlines Petitions for Washington, D.C./Beijing Route
Oct. 9, 2006 –United Airlines is asking for support to initiate the first nonstop capital-to-capital service between Washington, D.C. Dulles (IAD) and Beijing, China (PEK), effective March 25, 2007. Washington, D.C., is currently is the largest U.S. metro area without service to China, while 28 leading world capitals have non-stop service to Beijing. Washington, D.C., has the largest Chinese population of any U.S. city without non-stop service.

The Department of Transportation has said that it will award one new route to China. United has applied to the department and has set up an online petition to grow support, citing that more than 10 million people live within a two hour drive of Washington, D.C. A Beijing flight through Dulles would serve almost 30 percent of the total U.S.-China travel market.

United argues that the capital-to-capital route would enhance and strengthen the economic and political relationships between the two countries, and open a welcome, and necessary, door to China.
