The Florida Sun Is Shining
October 12, 2004 – Florida has been quick to recover after being pounded by four hurricanes this hurricane season. Last week, reports from the Florida Keys, to Miami, to Fort Lauderdale all stated that no damage was sustained from most recent Hurricane Jeanne. All major metropolitan areas were also reported open with the exception of the Pensacola area.
Director of the National Hurricane Center, Max Mayfield said, "To have four strong hurricanes hit the same state, in the same year, is almost unheard of. The last time four hurricanes hit the same state was in 1886 in Texas. I doubt very seriously if it will happen again, at least not in my lifetime."
The Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau launched a $300,000 advertising campaign called "Miami, Open for Business," in efforts to bring travelers back to the sunshine state.
According to TravelWeekly, the campaign will consist of 15- and 30-second TV commercials featuring singer Gloria Estefan and NBA star Schaquille O’Neal, who plays for the Miami Heat, saying, "There’s no place like Miami." The commercials will air in the destination’s major markets, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and Atlanta.
