Meet Your NTA Ambassador: Mike Gwinn

Have a question about what to expect at Travel Exchange, how to work the TREX floor, or what to ask during appointments? NTA ambassadors are experienced NTA members who have been there, done that, and are ready to help fellow members make the most of their time in Tulsa.
One of those members is Mike Gwinn of the Pigeon Forge Department of Tourism. After attending five Travel Exchanges and three Contacts (the NTA tour operator retreat), Gwinn has plenty of experience to share.
“What keeps me coming back is the format that includes quality, relevant educational sessions, appointments with tour operators that I do not see at any other tour and travel show, and an NTA staff that is in touch with our needs and genuinely cares about each member,” Gwinn said.
Gwinn remembers getting some of that same guidance during his first Travel Exchange, when fellow NTA Ambassador Clayton Whitehead of Sports Leisure Vacations led a session for first timers.
“His passion for our industry confirmed and reminded me of why I love what I do in representing a destination and providing great experiences to people who travel to our area,” Gwinn said. “He is one of many who encourage and are available to support our efforts to grow and be our best.”
If Gwinn could go back to his first TREX, he would tell himself to get involved sooner. An introvert by nature, he said he initially hesitated to step into conversations with other attendees. Now, he encourages newcomers to get outside their comfort zones.
“Arrive early, stay until the very end, attend everything, and volunteer as much as your schedule allows,” he said. “Sit with different people at every networking and meal opportunity.”
That same intentional approach applies to appointments. Gwinn recommends researching tour operators before TREX, asking questions, and most importantly, listening.
“Respond to their questions and do not just give your sales pitch,” he said. He also encourages members to ask how and when their appointment partners prefer to be contacted afterward and then follow through.
Gwinn also makes a point to attend the DMO educational sessions and forums, which he said have provided some of the best ideas and practices he continues to use.
And if another member needs a little help finding their footing at TREX, that’s exactly why Gwinn is an NTA ambassador.
“I am just happy to help in any way,” he said. “I am glad to share ideas and best practices and invite them to join me at a particular table or conversation during networking opportunities. I love making connections and finding the best person for them to connect with.”
