It’s Not Too Late to Register for Tourism-Caring for America
February 14, 2006 – Registration is still open for the Tourism-Caring for America cleanup event along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, March 16-19. This year’s event will include two full days of work at various tourism-related sites that were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.
The cleanup will take place along the Gulf Coast towns of Biloxi, Gulfport, Long Beach and D’Iberville, Mississippi. Examples of the work include removal of debris, raking, planting, painting and general cleanup.
Those who are unable to attend may make donations or contribute airline miles to Tourism Cares to offset operational costs. You can do the same by contacting Lisa Schmiemann at 888.821.5990.
All accommodations made through Tourism Cares will be for a three-night stay in "communal" housing. This type of housing – on cots in tent cities, military barracks and community centers – has been used by other volunteer organizations in this region. Volunteers will need to provide their own sleeping bags, pillows and towels.
Registration is open to all members of the travel and tourism industry. You can click here to access the form you’ll need to fill out and fax to Tourism Cares (781.821.8949) prior to Feb. 24 to ensure housing availability. Information and a helpful frequently-asked-questions page is available at http://www.tourismcares.org/.
