U.S. executive order update

On Monday, March 6, U.S. President Donald Trump signed a revised executive order limiting entry from six countries.

The new measure contains some key differences from the original order signed in January. The new order prohibits travel to the United States for 90 days from six largely Muslim countries: Sudan, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia and Yemen. The new order excludes Iraq, a strong U.S. ally in the fight against ISIS.

The order, which takes effect March 16, does not restrict legal permanent U.S. residents or green card holders from re-entering the United States. The first executive order initially did restrict this, on a case-by-case basis. The order will allow individuals who held visas by Jan. 27, 2017, or earlier to enter the U.S.

The new order halts all refugee admissions for 120 days. It does not indefinitely suspend the entry of Syrian refugees specifically, as the first executive order had. It also revokes the previous executive order.

Pam Inman issued the following statement regarding the new executive order:

“NTA recognizes that international visitation accounts for significant revenue and jobs in U.S. destinations, and we will advocate for a welcoming climate that encourages travel from abroad. NTA also embraces the goal of maintaining secure travel systems that ensure the safety of all citizens, and we are poised to work with the administration and Congress to maintain the highest level of safety. The two are not mutually exclusive and in fact, go hand-in-hand.”
