Final Two Gulf Coast Media Seminars Rescheduled
Last Friday, the NTA-Edelman team learned that some Gulf Coast members were concerned about the possible impact of tropical storm Bonnie so the dates for the final two crisis and media relations seminars were moved to August. The new dates are:
- August 10 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. CT, at the Kaiser Realty Ballroom in Gulf Shores, Alabama
- August 11 from10 a.m.-1 p.m. CT at the Sanders Beach Center in the Corinne Jones Community Center Ballroom in Pensacola, Florida
Read the news release for an outline of the seminar and register today for "Practical Skills for the Oil Spill Crisis: Managing Media Relations and Building Business through a Crisis." Also, we’d love your help in promoting the sessions to tourism-related businesses being affected by the oil spill and encourage you to distribute this information. To view comments from seminar attendees and for access to the latest destination information from the Gulf Coast, see www.NTAOnline.com/gulfcoast.
Member Survey Shows Economic Recovery for All Member Segments
Tour operators, suppliers and DMOs alike report optimistic sales and visitor numbers for the second quarter 2010 versus the same time last year with 72 percent of operators, 75 percent of suppliers and 83 percent of DMOs all reporting the number of visitors and/or sales are the same to 10 percent or higher in the second quarter of 2010.
The good news continues as members project continued growth in sales/visitors for the third quarter of 2010 versus the same time in 2009. Twenty-eight percent of operators, 33 percent of suppliers and 32 percent of DMOs all project growth of 10 percent or more for the third quarter.
Congratulations to Nanci Sikes of the Tuolumne County Visitors Bureau (Yosemite North). She won a month’s worth of advertising in the Tuesday newsletter for participating in the Member Needs Survey.

Arrivals to Asia and the Pacific Have Grown by 10 Percent
The Pacific Asia Travel Association released preliminary Asia and the Pacific international visitor arrivals figures for the months of April and May 2010, showing year-over-year growth in arrivals of 7 percent and 16 percent respectively. For the first five months of 2010, international visitor arrivals to the region grew by 10 percent as compared to the same period last year.
The improving global economic environment continued to boost overall travel demand in April and May. However, there was a noticeable impact on air travel caused by the ash cloud from Iceland’s volcanic eruption, which dampened arrival flows to and from Europe. Growth was much stronger in May with the end of the ash cloud problem in Europe and the Labour Day holiday in China; however, this monthly comparison is against a lower arrivals base in May 2009 when the travel industry, already down from the global recession, was hit further by the spread of (H1N1).

NTA at The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth
NTA tour operators donned Western apparel and immersed themselves into Calgary’s cowboy culture during the Horsepower Product Development Trip July 16-19. Centered around the Calgary Stampede, an annual 10-day rodeo and festival that bills itself as the "The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth," the tour also included stops in Drumheller and at a local ranch where attendees saddled up for a horseback ride along Alberta’s Kananaskis River.
"Calgary and the Stampede definitely are on the must-see list, and I will pay it forward to everyone," said Laura Davis, director of travel services for CANADA à la Carte. "Especially our 200 agents and auto travel counselors. I will make sure we get them selling this great event and destination."
Among the trip’s many highlights were a traditional Stampede free pancake breakfast, a behind-the-scenes tour of the rodeo and a stop at Heritage Park Historical Village, where Deb Alsen led a guided tour of Canada’s largest living history museum. NTA tour-goers had the opportunity to take in the Royal Tyrell Museum of Paleontology and Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park, as well as visit with "The Amazing Race" star and professional bull rider, Cord McCoy, and Rick Fraser, one of the world’s top chuck-wagon drivers.
The Calgary Horsepower PDT was hosted by Tourism Calgary along with its partners, Travel Alberta and the Calgary Stampede. The International Hotel Suites Calgary, an NTA supplier member, served as the group’s host hotel. Photos and a complete wrap-up of the trip will be in your September Courier.
