Try These New Direct Request Options  Convention Appointments

The Direct Request system is now open.

This system allows you to fill your schedule by requesting appointments with colleagues who have open time slots at the same time as you. If you are attending Convention, log in and make sure you add appointments and respond to requests often.

New this year:

  • Organize your appointments. The tools on the appointment Web site let you print your appointment list in a booklet format or download them into Excel.
  • Suppliers and operators: Use the Direct Request system to schedule appointments for the Fast Pitch session.
  • Build your shopping list. Add companies to your shopping list and use it as a target list for those you don’t have appointments with. Make a point to catch up with those on your list during Convention. The best place to do this may be the Destination Pavilion (for tour operators) or by walking the Convention floor (for DMOs and suppliers.)

 

Don’t forget to print out your final list and bring it with you to Montréal. (Drop it in the Convention folder we just mailed you.) Contact NTA Headquarters if you have any questions.

Summer Bookings Increased in These Top Three U.S. Inbound Markets 

The second quarter Travel Trade Barometer data is in, and things are looking good for U.S. inbound arrivals from the top three overseas markets — the UK, Japan and Germany.

The UK report showed that bookings for travel to the United States in second quarter 2010 did decrease one to three percent, on average, compared to second quarter 2009. However, summer bookings were projected to be higher, on average, than the same time last year.

In Japan, bookings in the second quarter 2010 increased significantly with the average increases up 10 to 15 percent. Additionally, 76 percent of the travel trade polled projected bookings from Japan to be higher for summer 2010 than for the same period in 2009. And, in Germany, tour operators reported a one to three percent increase in year-over-year bookings to the U.S. for the second quarter with projected increases for summer bookings.

Global Business Expert Heads MONTAGE Educational Lineup  Tom Faranda

The educational line-up for MONTAGE now features global business executive and forecaster Tom Faranda (at right). Faranda has been a candidate for the U.S. Senate, served as president of The Hospital Corporation of Chicago and was named "one of the most exciting speakers in America" by Meetings & Conventions Magazine.

At MONTAGE, April 12-14 in Aberdeen, Scotland, Faranda will present a two-part session, "Global Realities that Impact Your Bottom Line." This session is an amazing trip around the world that shows you, by country and with a specific time line, what is going to happen in the next 10 years and how it will affect your bottom line. A fast-paced and humorous program, "Global Realities" will take an objective and unforgettable look at future trends that will help you create your own global strategy to maximize the growth and profit of your company.

In addition to Faranda’s two-part session, Scott Johnson of NTA research partner Travel Market Insights will set the stage for where Americans are traveling and future trends for outbound travel in his presentation,  "U.S. Outbound Travel Highlights and Forecasts." And, Dr. Joe Goldblatt and Chris Preston of Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, Scotland, will show you how to take all of the information you’ve learned and turn it into a winning marketing plan with the seminar, "Twenty-first Century Global Packaged Travel Marketing Forces and Trends: The Black Swans and Golden Geese."

Convention Volunteering: It Does a Career Good 

Now that you have your appointment schedule, take a couple of minutes to sign up to be a Convention volunteer this year. Whether you are a Convention veteran or this is your first time attending, volunteering is another way to enhance your experience in Montréal and make new contacts in the industry.

There are numerous volunteer areas and times throughout the week, many of which could fit your schedule. Two specific needs are Convention greeters and Cyber Café assistants. For DMOs and tour operators, a great way to help out is to allow one of the students taking part in Tourism Cares’ Experience the Industry program sit with you during a portion of your appointments.

You can view volunteer opportunities and make your selections by opening the Volunteer Form with your NTA e-mail and password. Please note that, while the Volunteering Web site will close this Friday, Nov. 5, at 5 p.m. (ET), you still will be able to sign up onsite in Montréal.

Get the Scoop at “The Scoop” 

The ice cream stand is back this year at Convention — with a twist. NTA Board members and NTA’s public affairs advocate, Steve Richer, CTP, will be manning "The Scoop" to serve ice cream, chat with Convention attendees, get feedback and promote NTA’s government advocacy efforts.

A suggested donation of $1 per scoop of ice cream will go to support the Government Issues Fund and NTA’s advocacy work on your behalf.

Convention Mall Adds Retail Shopping 

Wouldn’t your friends and family love a souvenir from Montréal? Well, you don’t have to leave the Convention floor to buy any! There will be three retail booths set up this year:

BIO-ORIGIN  Purchase perfumes, body scrubs, hand cream, shampoo and more made in Canada from Québec apple orchards.

Royer Boutique  Between gallery and boutique, Royer Boutique represents more than 125 young and innovative Canadian artists, and will have jewelry and unique art available.

Souvenirs Neil  The place to find those Montréal souvenirs. This booth offers a vast collection of Inuit sculptures in addition to moccasins, masks, totem poles, maple sweets and other souvenirs.

Each booth will accept credit cards and Canadian currency. Support local vendors and take home a taste of Montréal!

Open Invitation to NTA Visit USA Center Opening  NTA Visit USA Center

NTA members are invited to attend the Nov. 20 grand opening of the NTA Visit USA Center in Shanghai. The new center will be the place Chinese travel trade comes to learn more about U.S. destinations and services for business development.

The event will bring together Chinese and U.S. government officials, travel professionals from both countries, and media members. If you are interested in attending the event, e-mail NTA’s Haybina Hao by Nov. 12.

  • The bypass bridge near Hoover Dam, which is expected to help cut travel time between Las Vegas and Phoenix for through traffic, opened Oct. 19.
  • A record 28.7 million passengers rode on Amtrak in the 2010 fiscal year and the rail provider collected a record $1.74 billion from ticket sales in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30.
  • Japan and the U.S. signed an Open Skies treaty erasing limits on flights and setting the stage for greater collaboration between the nations’ airlines.
  • Heathrow Airport recorded its busiest September ever, as more than 6.2 million flew from the London airport.
  • Entrepreneur has listed 25 must-have apps for small businesses, which cover functions such as sales, finance and productivity.
