World’s Longest Suspension Bridge to be Built in Sicily
A project to build the world’s longest suspension bridge linking the island of Sicily to the mainland of Italy became operational yesterday.

According to CNN.com, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi claims the company charged with building the bridge approved a financing plan and timetable that will allow work to commence in 2005. The bridge should be completed and open to traffic in 2011.

The projected bridge will be suspended between two vertical pillars taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris with a span of 3.3. km, or two miles, making it three times the size of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Calif. The bridge will cost 4.6 billion euros, or $4.9 billion.
