World Tourism Organization Adopts New Acronym
December 2, 2005 – The World Tourism Organization has changed its acronym from WTO to UNWTO, United Nations World Tourism Organization.
"A decade of terminological overlap ended on Wednesday when the United Nations World Tourism Organization, previously known as the WTO, added the letters UN to its acronym to differentiate it from the World Trade Organization," a United Nations release stated.
The overlapping acronyms arose when the Geneva-based World Trade Organization was created in 1995, some 20 years after the Madrid-based tourism agency had adopted its current name.
