Update on Anchorage

December 4, 2018

Anchorage is cleaning up after an earthquake struck the city the morning of Nov. 30. Though there’s work to be done in terms of personal property, public infrastructure across the city is in relatively good shape, given the circumstances.

  • The Anchorage International Airport resumed normal operations Friday, just hours after the quake. Travelers should check with their carrier for any delays or anticipated disruption.
  • The state department of transportation continues to assess and repair roads and bridges. Most surface streets in Anchorage are operating normally. There are some delays and lane closures relating to repair work. Updates can be found at dot.alaska.gov/earthquake2018/
  • The Alaska Railroad is assessing railroad tracks between Anchorage and Fairbanks. Check with the railroad for updates and any implications for travel in the coming weeks.

It’s too early to assess the extent of cleanup work to be done on a business-by-business basis; however, most hotels, tours and attractions report they are operating normally. We recommend contacting a business directly with any questions or concerns about bookings and reservations.

Travelers arriving in the coming days and week—and those planning travel next year—can always contact alocal@anchorage.net for answers to travel-related questions and trip-planning assistance from a local expert.

We often talk about how tough, resilient and resourceful we are as Alaskans, and the past few days have been emphatic proof that all those qualities are at our core.

If you have customers or clients with questions, we’ve prepared some travel information on the quake on Anchorage.net. We plan to update this information as needed in the coming days.
