TSA Adjusts Carry-on Restrictions
August 14, 2006 – The Transportation Security Administration announced Sunday several tweaks to carry-on restrictions following the ban of carrying liquids, gels and lotions after last week’s spoiled terrorism plot.
Under the new rules, travelers can take up to four ounces of non-prescription medicine, glucose gel for diabetics, solid lipstick and baby food. In addition, the agency said it will now ask all passengers to remove their shoes so they may be X-rayed.
All aerosols are prohibited.
"The refinements we are announcing are based on feedback from our security officers, the public and our partners," said TSA Assistant Secretary Kip Hawley in a written statement. "We are maintaining the same level of security while clarifying interpretations in the field. These tweaks are aimed at making a smoother process at the checkpoint."
TSA says the security level remains at Severe (or Red) for commercial flights originating in the U.K. bound for the U.S. All other flights operating in or destined for the U.S. remain at High (or Orange).
"Travelers will continue to see an increase in visibility and use of canine detection teams. Random gate inspections and bag searches will continue," TSA said.
