TIA Survey Shows Geotourism is New Trend in Travel
Oct. 09, 2003 – U.S. travelers have strong feelings about preserving the natural environment, history and culture and are willing to pay higher costs for travel services that protect and preserve the environment, according to a survey conducted by the Travel Industry Association of America.

The survey, sponsored by National Geographic Traveler magazine, revealed that:

  • More than three-quarters of American travelers feel it is important that their visits not damage the environment
  • 62 percent say it’s important to learn about other cultures when they travel
  • 38 percent of travelers say they would pay more to use a travel company that strives to protect and preserve the environment

The two-part study documented that there are more than 55 million Americans who can be classified as geotourists. Geotourism is defined as tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of the place being visited, including its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage and the well-being of its residents.
