Passing of Longtime Senator, Others Mourned

August 11, 2010

The NTA community extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of former Senator Ted Stevens, as well as others impacted by yesterday’s plane crash in Alaska.

"The death of former U. S. Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska is a tragedy," said NTA President Lisa Simon, CTP.  "In his 40 years of service to the nation in the United States Senate, Stevens helped set national priorities that included a strong tourism sector which certainly reflected its strength in Alaska.  The circumstances of his death in yesterday’s air crash make this loss all the more painful."

Stevens was the longest serving Republican senator in history. With the other recent losses of Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts and Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia, the Senate has lost three veterans whose combined service exceeded 130 years.
