Parks Canada Seeks Comment on Proposed Fee Structure Change
Parks Canada is soliciting comment on a proposed change to its current fee structure which would go into effect April 1, 2004.
Under the proposed change, the fee would jump from $3 per person per day to $6 for Banff, Jasper, Yoho and Kootenay National Parks. The fee for Revelstoke/Glacier, Pacific Rim, Waterton Lakes, Elk Island, Prince Albert and Riding Mountain National Parks would increase $4.25 per person per day.
NTA has commented on the timing of and the lack of 18 months’ notice on the fee hike. While NTA was notified that a fee increase would be forthcoming back in November, no specific details were given and that "notice" does not qualify under the 18-month notification pledge.
Parks Canada is proposing the fee hike because of rising maintenance costs and the immediate need to either replace or make major repairs to one-third of its visitor facilities and to do major repairs to another one-third within the next five years.
If you have comments or questions about the proposed change, please e-mail Corina Finlay with Parks Canada at corina.finlay@pc.gc.ca or fax her at 403-762-1592. Also, please forward your comments or questions to Matt Grayson, director of NTA’s Government & Industry Relations at matt.grayson@ntastaff.com.
