Parks Canada Reports Union Demands Would Threaten Services
August 10, 2004 – Parks Canada issued a public appeal yesterday for both sides of the Union debate to resolve their dispute. The Agency contends that meeting the current demands of the Public Service Alliance of Canada would significantly threaten its ability to provide services to Canadians.
"Accepting the union’s current demands would require Parks Canada to cut our services by nearly one-quarter," said Garby Fortin, Parks Canada’s Directors General, Western and Northern Canada.
The two parties have agreed to meet August 11 and 12, 2004. If an agreement is not met at this time, the employees will be in a legal strike position.
"We welcome PSAC’s decision to return to the table and we have offered to sit with them for as long as it takes to conclude a deal," said Forbin. "Parks Canada is committed to achieving a negotiated solution that is fair to our employees, but the union’s insistence on raises of up to 43% remains the stumbling block."
While there is a chance that services may be disrupted if a strike occurs, Parks Canada reports that contingency plans are in the works that will aid them in maintaining the highest possible level of service during any work stoppage. Tour operators should contact the center with any questions at 1-888-733-8888.
NTA will continue to work with Parks Canada to keep members updated.
