NTA Symposium Underway Following Capitol Evacuations
May 11, 2005 – More than 50 NTA members were in attendance as the Grassroots Symposium got underway yesterday. Sessions running through noon today included speakers Rep. Jim Oberstar (D-Minn.), Travel Industry of America President and CEO Roger Dow, and Doug Baker of the Department of Commerce. There was also an industry panel this morning with NTA, ASTA, ABA and SYTA participating.
This afternoon, participants will visit with Congress and their staff on Capitol Hill. Key issues on this year’s agenda include passport regulations, the Fair Labor Standards Act/overtime pay for tour operators, border crossing/security procedures and the new fax regulations.
The afternoon got off to an interesting start, as the NTA motorcoach entered Capitol Hill at the same time the White House, the Capitol and the Supreme Court were evacuated when a small plane violated airspace over Washington. However, once the all-clear was given, participants proceeded with their scheduled Hill visits.
