International Tourism To Mexico On The Rise
July 7, 2004 – According to Mexico’s Tourism Secretariat (Sectur), Mexico’s tourism revenue grew fifteen percent during the first four months of 2004, as compared to the same period last year.
Sectur attributes this increase to an improving U.S. economy and a desire by Americans to travel closer to home.
Some 6.8 million international tourists traveled to Mexico during the first four months of the year. Tourism arrivals reportedly rose 12.7% from a year ago, with tourism revenue totaling $3.9 billion during this period as compared to $3.4 billion a year ago.
Tourism spending is also projected to increase by eleven percent for the year, up to more than $10.5 billion. The country is even expected to surpass that forecast. Tourism is the third most important economic activity in Mexico, representing 8.3 percent of the Gross Domestic Product and providing an estimated 1.7 million jobs. Mexico currently ranks eighth in the number of international visitors and tenth in international tourism revenues, according to the World Tourism Organization.
