Contact Your Legislators this National Tourism Week
May 14, 2008 – The 25th Annual National Tourism Week is May 10-18. The need to gain the attention of our national leaders has never been more critical than this year, a presidential election year and a time when the U.S. economy is struggling. That is why NTA is encouraging you to take advantage of this nationally recognized celebration to contact your state and federal representatives to educate them about the power of travel and how their decisions impact the lucrative travel economy.
NTA is focused on aiding the U.S. economy and increasing international inbound visitation, as well as improving the negative image of the U.S. abroad. Increasing the number of inbound tourists by 10 million would generate 151,000 jobs, add $12 billion to the economy, and increase a positive perception of America. We are reaching out to the 2008 presidential candidates and the current administration asking them to support the following issues to help address this critical need.
- The Travel Promotion Act of 2007 (S.1661) – The Act will address serious deficiencies regarding the communication of U.S. travel policies and the promotion of the United States as a welcoming travel destination.
- Executive Office of Travel and Tourism – In order to address interdepartmental issues such passport and visa issues and security guidelines and procedures, NTA believes strong federal leadership is critical. NTA is asking the candidates to commit to the appointment of White House staff, such as an Executive Office of Travel and Tourism, which will have the travel and tourism economy as its focus.
NTA encourages you to keep these efforts in mind this week and throughout the year. Consider contacting your state representatives. You can find their contact information through NTA Online or contact NTA Director of Government and Industry Relations matt.grayson@NTAstaff.com. Another opportunity to get involved is through the newly revitalized Grassroots Action Network, a group dedicated to keeping our national political leaders informed. Finally, don’t forget to register now to attend the Grassroots Symposium, June 24-26 in Washington, D.C., where we will be taking these issues to the Hill.
