Commission Approves Tunnel to Washington Monument
The National Capital Planning Commission granted preliminary approval last week to a plan to build a tunnel to the Washington Monument and expand a visitors’ lodge east of the monument.
According to CNN.com, the tunnel would become the only access to the monument, a design that will thwart terrorism. The tunnel and the new lodge would not be in place until after 2005. The plans still need final approval from the commission.
