Cancun Tourism Industry Recovering
November 3, 2005 – The Mexican Association of the Destination Management Company has released a report on the impact of Hurricane Wilma on Cancun. The category 4 hurricane lasted for 48 hours and affected the tourist and urban zone of the major tourist destination – one that lodges about 27,000 hotel rooms and more than 700,000 inhabitants.

Wilma caused Cancun to loose electricity for two days. The highways were completely flooded and the airport was forced to shut down, stranding thousands of tourists.

"Our commitment is to recover the normality in 50 days’ time, rebuilding all the damage to be able to offer the best tourist supply of the Caribbean for the next Winter Season and a better city for the Mexicans who are willing to make a new life," stated the written announcement.

As of Nov. 1, the following properties reported opening dates to the public as follows:

The Hotel Association of Cancun assures that there will be 5,000 rooms in full operation by the end of the month for the high Winter Season. They stress that they will be running at the same level as before the hurricane.

Additionally, the statement urged those groups booked to hotels that are still closed due to repairs to visit other Mexican destinations such as Acapulco, Los Cabos or Puerto Vallarta.

"The effort of the citizens, entrepreneurs, authorities supported by the whole country will achieve to recover Cancun not only as it was before but much better," the report stated.
