Bush Administration Tightens Cuba Travel Again
June 17, 2004 – The Bush Administration has once again tightened restrictions on Cuba. According to Travel Weekly, the Office of Foreign Assets Control, the enforcement arm of the Treasury Department, issued a rule eliminating once-a-year family-related travel to Cuba.

Current regulations allow American family members additional trips to Cuba that are determined on a case-by-case basis. However, under the new regulations, only "case-by-case licensing" of family visits is permitted for one trip during a three-year period. Regulations are to go into effect June 30, 2004.

Cuba appears to be a campaign issue in the presidential election, particularly in Florida, which has a large Cuban population.

Bush believes that tighter restrictions on Cuba will speed the end of Communist rule on the island. John Kerry argues the new travel restrictions will do more to hurt families than the Cuban government.
